Lancaster Street Pastors has been going into the city centre between 10.30 pm – 3 am on a Saturday night for the last three and a half years. The volunteers are made up of Christians from local churches.
The aim of Street Pastors is to Listen, Care and Help without prejudice anyone we meet. The things we can become involved in can vary from just having a friendly chat with someone to calling and waiting for an ambulance to arrive. As Lancaster Street Pastors we aim to bring the presence of God into the night time of Lancaster City Centre. We have had many opportunities to pray for people and we are very well received and appreciated.
Lancaster Street Pastors are always looking for new recruits, if you would like more information please feel free to contact us.
Here’s an account from a member of Christians Alive church on her experience of being a Street Pastor.
“Where do I start? Well I would start from the beginning, about three years ago.
I joined Street Pastors when it first started. The idea of helping people at night on the street appealed to me and so I was there, out on the streets on the very first night that Street Pastors was launched in Lancaster. It was a bit daunting at first but then compassion welled up in me when I saw the state of drunken girls and boys out on the street at night. Some of them become vulnerable by their intoxicated state. As Street Pastors our job is to go out and love them, help them where help is needed and be a listening ear. We have cleaned sick, taken drunk people home, given out flip-flops, water, foil blankets too amongst other things. But the most rewarding thing is that we are able to share the gospel with people, not because we are bible bashing them but because they ask “Why do you do this?” We are able to reply why and from there the questions start rolling and conversations take place so naturally. It’s really beautiful and as one person said “you people are like angels on the street” in appreciation of the help given”.
