Over a decade ago, Barbara Tempest went to visit a project involving children in a rural town of Andhra Pradesh called Ponnur. When she came back to the church, she set about creating sponsorship for the children. A combination of support from outside and the generosity of those within Christians Alive helped to build and establish The Barachel Orphanage.We continue to arrange and send sponsorship for 31 children who are fed, clothed and helped with education fees through their sponsorship. We have also had the privilege to help over 20 other sponsored children grow into responsible adults who now either have careers or families of their own.

Someone from Christians Alive visits the children periodically to ensure that the sponsorship is being effective and well used.

In 2004 we also financed the building of The Barachel Leprosy Home. This continues to provide much needed shelter for people who would otherwise be homeless beggars in an area prone to tropical storms and floods.
